Billy Sweep Saunter

Billy Sweep (real name William Guest) was the village sweep of no fixed abode who lodged in the boiler house of a winding engine nearHaighBridgedownHaigh Lane, just up the lane fromCommon Lane. One Sunday in Sept 1889, pure water was running in the shaft, Billy Sweep descended to collect some and was killed by the winding cage. A grave stone was erected to his memory in Flockton.
